Wat Rachanadda

Wat Rachanadda

The most interesting feature at Wat Rachanadda (also often spelled Ratchanaddaram) is the metal monastery. Originally conceived as a chedi to complement the temple, it evolved into an elaborate meditation chamber modeled on a 3rd-century BC Sri Lankan temple (the original is now ruined). Passages dissect each level, running north to south and east to west. The meditation cells are at each intersection.

In the temple’s courtyard is Bangkok’s best amulet market. Tourists may face disapproval if they attempt to take talismans home as souvenirs. Across the road, behind the old city walls, is the Doves’ Village, where singing doves are sold for competitions.
