This dilapidated temple complex is one of the five temples built in Bangkok by Rama III (ruled 1824–51). Rama liked Chinese design, as can be seen from the statuary dotted around the courtyard (brought to Thailand as ballast on empty rice barges returning from China) and the Chinese-style polygonal chedi.

The complex’s immense wihan contains a large sitting Buddha image. In the temple grounds is the biggest bronze bell in Thailand.

Near the wat, on the other side of Khlong Bangkok Yai, is Wichai Prasit Fortress, built to guard the river approach to Thon Buri when Ayutthaya was the dominant city in Thailand.
