Exploring Ko Samui: the East Coast and Minor Sights

This provincial capital is a small but busy commercial town. Most tourists pass through Trat only en route to Ko Chang. However, the town’s popularity is likely to increase in line with that of the archipelago. Trat has several attractions, including its markets, most of which are centered around Tait Mai and Sukhumvit roads. The covered market on Sukhumvit Road has a good selection of food and drink stalls. Also of interest are the gem mining villages around Trat, such as Bo Rai, where rubies are mined. Local guesthouses can arrange trips. Located about 1 mile (2 km) southwest of Trat is Wat Bupharam (“flower temple”), set in pleasant grounds with large, shady trees. Some of the original buildings within the temple complex, including the wihan, the bell tower, and the monks’ residences, or kutis, date from the late Ayutthaya period
