With its open fields interspersed with forest, this 487-sq mile (1,262-sq km) park offers good hiking and bird-watching. Barking deer can also be seen, and elephants are sometimes found at the salt licks. The cascades of Kaeng Sopha lie 6 miles (9 km) from the park headquarters. Farther west are the Poi falls and smaller Kaeng Song rapids.
At Khao Kho, to the east, is a rehabilitation project for the Hmong, displaced through involvement in anti-Communist fighting in the 1970s–80s. The King takes great interest in the program and has a palace nearby.
