Taksin Monument

Located on the busy Wongwian Yai traffic circle, this 20th-century equestrian statue commemorates King Taksin (ruled 1767–82), who moved the capital to Thon Buri after the destruction of Ayutthaya by the Burmese in 1767.

In 1950 the commission to design the monument was given to Professor Silpa Bhirasri, the Italian “father” of Thai modern art who took a Thai name and citizenship. The striking statue took three years to complete and was finally unveiled in 1954. Each year, on December 28 – the anniversary of King Taksin’s coronation – many Thais come to pay homage at the statue.
