Exploring Ko Samui: the East Coast and Minor Sights

Pak Chom

Pak Chom is little more than a picturesque settlement of ramshackle wooden buildings clustered by the bank of the Mekong River, 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Chiang Khan. It’s a good place to stop for refreshments and to enjoy the scenery. In the 1970s and 1980s the town had a somewhat higher profile thanks to Ban Winai, a Lao Hmong refugee camp of some 15,000 inhabitants. It was established when these tribespeople fled Laos in the wake of the Pathet Lao, who overthrew the Lao monarchy and took control of the country in 1975. In 1992 the camp was disbanded and the Hmong moved to Chiang Kham in the Chiang Rai province of Northern Thailand
