Mae Taeng Valley

The area around Mae Taeng, especially the vicinity of the Taeng River to the northwest of the town, is very popular with trekkers. The land has been terraced and irrigated to improve agricultural production, and the variety of crops grown has created an attractive contrast of landscapes. However, most trekkers come here not only for the peaceful surroundings but also to witness everyday scenes in the region’s many Lisu, Karen, and Hmong villages. Other activities, including river rafting, can be combined with treks in the area. Established in 1995, the Elephant Nature Park, in the beautiful Mae Taeng Valley, is home to dozens of rescued elephants. Founder Lek Chailert’s efforts to save the endangered Asian elephant have received praise and awards from around the world. The center welcomes volunteer workers.
