King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), a great champion of modernization, was the instigator of rail travel in Thailand. The first railroad line, begun in 1891, was a private line from Paknam to Hua Lampong. Today, the historic station is Bangkok’s main rail junction. From here, trains leave for the North, Northeast, the Central Plains, and the South. The city’s other station, Bangkok Noi, serves only the South.
