Coral Reefs

Chumphon is regarded by some as the point of cultural transition between the heartland of the Buddhist Tai peoples, and the peninsular south of the country, where Muslim culture is strong. The town was the home of Prince Chumphon, the Father of the Royal Thai Navy, who died in 1923. Nearby, the 225-ft (68-m) long HMS Chumphon torpedo boat, decommissioned in 1975, has been preserved. It forms a distinctive landmark. The reefs around the 47 tiny islands off Chumphon’s 140-mile (222-km) long coast are becoming increasingly popular with divers. Tour companies in town will arrange diving day trips to such islands as Samet, Mattra, Ngam Yai, and Ngam Noi. Chumphon is also the most convenient place from which to get a ferry to Ko Tao
