This small town used to be the thriving center of the Eastern Seaboard’s gem trade. The surrounding mines, once renowned for the quality of their rubies (tab tim), have almost dried up, so today the Bo Rai gem trade is small. Only one morning market of any significance, the Khlong Yaw market, remains. The market has a reverse system of buying and selling – buyers sit at makeshift tables and vendors stroll around displaying their wares.
